Antique American Ovoid Salt Glaze. Stoneware Pottery Pitcher, Possibly Texas Hill Country, Circa 1860-90. This sturdy antique hand-thrown stoneware pitcher exhibits a lovely ovoid form and superior details including a refined beveled lip at the top opening and a ribbed handle with a sharp pointed termination. Found in Central Texas, I speculate that it was made by master potter from t he Texas Hill country, which saw a large immigration of Germanic farmers and tradesmen in the second half of the 1800’s. Th is ovoid form in stoneware was prevalent in the East during the first half of the 1800’s but persisted later in the Rhineland region of Europe. No cracks or repairs. Has minor overall wear including two visible chips on the interior of the top rim opening (see photos). The salt glaze and the interior Albany slip are in excellent shape making it usable.
