When you drink whiskey from this jug think of the maker. That’s what is inscribed on this jug! A one-gallon jug, about 10.5 high, salt glazed, c. No potter named Lucas was listed in Jim Murphy’s book on 19th-century Muskingum County pottery. We struggled to re-interpret the last name to fit a known potter thinking it was c. Born in Zanesville in 1890, Lucas was listed in the 1910 census as a potter, and worked in the pottery industry for the next 20+ years, including in 1930 as a “handle setter” in a pottery. By 1940, Lucas had left the pottery industry and worked as a truck driver. When he died in 1956, his obituary indicated that he was employed several years by the Ohio Pottery company. Perhaps not the most visually punchy piece of stoneware you’ll see today, but it’s a great inscription and a nifty little piece of Ohio history. This item is in the category “Antiques\Primitives”.
