MID-19TH C ANTIQUE 3 GAL AMERICAN STONEWARE HANDLED JUG, WithBLUE SLIP FLORAL DEC

MID-LATE 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN ANTIQUE THREE GALLON DECORATED SALT GLAZED STONEWARE. HANDLED JUG, W/BLUE SLIP FLORAL MOTIF. 16½” Height x 9″ Width. This nearly unscathed American antique, mid-19th century blue slip decorated, salt glazed, three gallon stoneware handled jug is in very well preserved overall antique condition. The slightly slanted jug spout occurred during the original production process, when the jug was either being thrown on the wheel or fired in the kiln. The jug is otherwise unscratched and undamaged. It isn’t stamped with a maker’s mark but is wonderfully decorated with hand painted, blue slip glazed floral motif on the upper front sidewall. The pouring spout, as well as the handle, are without any noticeable flea bites, fractures or loss. The bottom edge of the jug, as is the top edge, is free from’knocks,’ damage and other condition issues. The blue slip floral motif decoration is very slippery, quickly realized and energetically applied. The putty white colored sidewalls are speckled with ochre spots, occurring during firing. The semi-transparent cobalt colors are rich, vibrant and still are vivid and saturated. For lovers of decorated stoneware jugs and crocks, this jug is evidence of the importance of these items to mid-19th century Americans and were regarded as functionable objects and not as merely decorative ones. They were used and used often. To find one in this kind of nearly undisturbed condition is unusual and a rare occurrence indeed. Good to Very Good overall antique condition.
