Edgefield Pottery Dave The Slave David Drake Southern Stoneware Crock Rare

Offering for your consideration is a fine 4 gallon piece of Southern history attributed to the renowned Slave Potter , David Drake. This storage jar is 12 inches tall & just over 40 inches in circumference. It weighs just under 20 pounds (19.8). This is a recently discovered artifact from an estate in Charleston , S. Inside was covered in remnants of lard/grease which for the most part has been removed. I would estimate the time period of this piece to be circa 1849 – 1859. Dave also potted & signed LM’ from 1840 – 1843. There are only a few vessels that have surfaced in recent years having date & signature during the ” dark ” period of Dave between 1844 & 1848. Many earlier pieces have been attributed to Dave as well. There are attributions that go back as far as 1821 to Dave. There is a 1 1/2 inch chip on the rim, also a small fleck 1/8 inch & 2 chips on one of the lug handles. A 1 inch & a 1/8 inch. They do not detract from the appearance of this beautiful jar. Signed very boldly , ” LM ” , 2 slash marks & 4 punctuates (dots). All of these marks are heavily drawn into the pot as if he were signing a one of a kind piece of art or perhaps angrily as he contemplated how one man could own another. Dave’s works are displayed in the Smithsonian , various museums and numerous private collections. Much of the information I have shared is from the book , ” Ceramics in America ” 2006.
