This pottery jug was created in the early 19th century and bears the stamp of the Boston merchant, JW TUFTS. James Walker Tufts (February 11, 1835 – February 3, 1902) is known for his founding of Pinehurst, North Carolina and for his development of a successful business in silver plate tableware. He also founded the Arctic Soda Fountain Co. And eventually merged with A. Puffer & Sons (Boston, Massachusetts), John Matthews (New York City, New York), and Charles Lippincott (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) to form the American Soda Fountain Co. Tufts was the inventor of the Arctic Soda Fountain and was installed as the first president of the merger that formed American Soda Fountain. The gray stoneware material and Americana style of this piece make it a great addition to any antique or primitive collection. Its origin can be traced back to the US Northeast region and it would make a great conversation starter in any home. This jug is a true piece of history, created in the 1800s and perfect for collectors and enthusiasts alike. This piece at one time had been turned into a lamp and has 2 holes drilled into it to run a cord through it. Other than that, it is in nearly as-made condition. All information is to the best of my knowledge. Please view all pics and do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.
