Antique ROCKINGHAM Stoneware President Garfield Pitcher Jug East Liverpool Ohio
Up for sale is an outstanding commemorative/memorial earthenware pottery pitcher, molded in tankard form, c. It is cylindrical in shape with a wide round base tapering gently inwards up towards the spout. It has a thick fancily embellished handle. On each side it is molded with a very strongly embossed side-profile bust of President James Garfield within a luxurious flowing wreath, and a nameplate embossed “J A GARFIELD” below the wreath. At the rim and above the base edge it has a floral and scroll motif all around. All this detailed molding is covered in a thick dark brown Rockingham lead glaze. It’s 8.25″ tall and 5.75″ in diameter at the base, 4.25 diameter at the rim. Signs point to this pitcher having been made in Ohio (likely an East Liverpool factory). First and most important is the fact that President Garfield was born and served decades in office in Ohio. I think a memorial pitcher for the slain president would be most likely to sell in his home state & home turf. Besides the historical aspect, it’s observed that a thick coating of Rockingham glaze on the base of objects is more frequently seen in Ohio Rockingham than other cities’. No one can say for certain but Ohio manufacture seems most likely. It is in good but not-perfect condition. No chips at least but moderate wear/scratching especially to the shoulders of the busts, and a very tight 5 hairline running from the rim downwards on one side. This crack is tough to see with the dark glaze anyway and it can display perfect. It is titled “Antique Rockingham + Bennington Pottery of North America”. This item is in the category “Pottery & Glass\Decorative Cookware, Dinnerware & Serveware\Jugs & Pitchers”. The seller is “hairkam” and is located in this country: US.
