ANTIQUE 1856-60 NICHOLS & BOYNTON BURLINGTON VT SIGNED SALT GLAZE JUG! C1856-60 Nichols & Boynton of Burlington VT signed salt glaze stoneware jug with cobalt decoration. According to “Early New England Potters and Their Wares” by Lura Woodside Watkins, Nichols & Alford was established in 1854 by E. Farrar to create common items as well as more ornate items in the Bennington style. The pottery stood on the south side of Pearl Street, between St. Paul’s and Church Streets. In 1856 the company became Nichols and Boynton, but at some time before 1860, it was taken over by H. Ballard whose name then appears on their billhead. Age stain, usage and shelf wear is noted on the piece as you can see in our posted photos… Nothing more than would be expected for it’s age and use. No major issues are found although we do note a small point of manufacture flaw at the base of the handle attachment. This has not affected the integrity. The floral flourish cobalt decoration is clear and vivid… A fine example of folk art in the day. Measures in at about 12 tall overall. Questions if you have them… We prefer our clients to have Public, rather than Private, feedback. Additional Packaging Requests : We have received a few requests to ” double box ” our items. While we take great care to pack our items normally, we do not generally double box.
