KILN TESTER Rare Novel Stoneware Salt Glazed KILN TESTER Dated 3 08
Pictured is a quite uncommon & rare salt glazed stoneware KILN TESTER. The rectangular bar was used to measure the relative shrinkage of items when placed in the kiln at a specific temperature & duration. The bar is incised with the measurements of 6″ & 2″ prior to firing. The markings now depict measurements of 5 1/2″ & 1 3/4″ after firing. It is likewise incised “3 – 08″ which I interpret to represent March 8th with a specific year not designated. I estimate, 1865 – 1895. As pictured, the stoneware bar measures 1 3/4″ X 1 7/8″ X 7 1/8. Condition is very good with a minor abrasion on one end & a chip on the other end. A great conversation piece and go-with for your personal stoneware collection….
