Antique 1850's JAMES RIVER CROCK, Blue Decorated Stoneware FOUR MILE CREEK 2 Gal
Rare, Early Mid-1800’s Bold Blue Decorated, James River Valley, Super Rare FOUR MILE CREEK Ovoid 2 Gallon Crock. Authenticated by Eric C. Jenkins, Author of Ceramics in Virginia: 19th Century Stoneware from the Lower James River Valley. HAND APPLIED, Bold Cobalt Blue tulips with wide leaves reach halfway down this crock, encircling the entire piece. MORE blue along the handle terminals makes for a stunning display piece. Four Mile Creek pottery was located just downstream from Richmond, VA in present day Charles City County. Please see pages 107 for the identification of the stamped “2”, as well as pages 112-115, for more information on Four Mile Creek Pottery. A photo of a pottery shard with this specific blue decoration is on Page 115, Fig. 2.67, furthest right. This is an extremely rare, historic crock. This same pottery area made stoneware for Thomas Jefferson. This crock has only a few apologies of a missing handle, a 3/8 chip above the other handle and a teeny manufacturing hairline filled with glaze. These are difficult to see due to blending in with the gray clay, as well as the captivating blue decorations. Please see all the attached pictures for the best descriptions. Measures: 12″ Tall x 8 1/2″ Widest x 6 1/4 Base. The item “Antique 1850’s JAMES RIVER CROCK, Blue Decorated Stoneware FOUR MILE CREEK 2 Gal” is in sale since Saturday, November 27, 2021.
