LATE 19TH CENTURY ANTIQUE AMERICAN SALT. GLAZED STONEWARE ONE-GALLON HANDLED WHISKEY/VINEGAR JUG, W/THIN. BLUE & WHITE BANDING. American antique stoneware handled jugs. 12″ Height x 7″ Width x 1 ½ Rim diameter. There’s one naturally occurring slight depression in an area of the jug’s stoneware ceramic sidewalls, which most likely occurred during the throwing of the vessel on a potter’s wheel. It was not corrected and was subsequently glazed and fired, since this was viewed as a utility item and not a decorative one in its time. Function here trumped form and decorative sensibilities and Yankee thriftiness and an unwillingness to throw out things’less-than-perfect,’ is in full evidence. There’s no cracks, hairlines, flea-bites, sidewall stains, material loss or interruption in the thin blue and white glazed bands. This is a wonderfully well preserved one gallon whiskey jug, which frankly, doesn’t come in much better and more well preserved condition than this. It’s nearly pristine. It’s hard to believe it’s 100 to 120 years old but its remarkable overall condition defies its age. The only thing it’s missing is the original cork stopper and wax used to seal its contents inside, which would have almost certainly been whiskey or vinegar. The stoneware jug has a salt glazed putty white base glaze, decorated with reoccurring bands of light cerulean blue and white thin bands on the top and bottom of the main cylindrical shaft of the form, which collapses into an inverted cone, upon which the handle is attached and the spout rises from. The edge of the pouring spout is miraculously clean and without chips, as is the handle. Very Good to Excellent, nearly pristine, almost immaculate overall condition.
