RARE EARLY to MID 19TH CENTURY AME RI CAN ANTIQUE SIGNED GOODWIN & WEBSTER OVOID, HANDLED, SALT-GLAZED STONEWARE JUG, with COBALT BLUE STAMPING on FRONT. SIDEWALL & COBALT BLUE SLIP GLAZE. On HANDLE TOP & BASE, WHEEL-THROWN. HANDLE & WIRE CUT BASE. Early to mid-19th century Ame ri can antique blue slip decorated salt-glazed stoneware jugs & crocks. 10 ½” Height x 6 ½” Width (Body). X 4 Base Width. This is a rare and very scarce early Ame ri can stoneware jug from a Boston, MA maker and early mercantile entity, especially in this kind of very well-preserved overall condition and especially with this coveted, early ovoid, antique form. There are literally no noticeable flea-bites or hairline cracks, bruises or glaze flakes on this outstanding piece of early Ame ric ana. There’s only a very small, slight bit of ceramic loss, right along the lower margin of the wire cut base, where the jug was removed from the throwing wheel. The salt glazed exterior now has a time-tempered, variegated range of color, involving putty white, pewter gray, yellow ochre and flashes of burnt sienna. The handle’s top and base have finger painted cobalt blue slip glaze ringed decoration. This is a magnificent, early Ame ri can, antique salt-glazed, ovoid stoneware handled jug, with Boston, Massachusetts provenance. Unabused, it largely escaped the ravages, trials and tribulations of time. The real, unbastardized and undisturbed deal. Simply gorgeous and in nearly originally constituted condition. If it wasn’t for the very small, slight bit of loss along the lower margin of the cut base plate, I could say with confidence that it was even in fact’museum-quality. Only a simple, small flea-bite and nearly unnoticeable amount of ceramic loss along its base, prevents me from making this unusual claim, especially for a piece of antique Ame ri can stoneware, that’s now between 170 to 190 years old. Very Good-Excellent overall antique condition. The item “RARE EARLY 19TH C ANTIQUE GOODWIN & WEBSTER, BOSTON MA OVOID STONEWARE STMPD JUG” is in sale since Monday, September 14, 2020.
