RARE MID-LATE 19TH CENTURY J B DOHERTY & CO, CORNER DUDLEY & ADAMS STREETS ROXBURY, MA AME RI CAN ANTIQUE TWO QUART, STAMPED, BLUE SLIP GLAZE DECORATED, HANDLED, SALT GLAZED STONEWARE WHISKEY JUG. UNGLAZED WIRE CUT BOTTOM. 19th century Ame ri can antique salt glazed, decorated stoneware whiskey jugs. 9 34″ Height x 5 14″ Width. Recently discovered in a North Shore, MA estate is this near pristine and almost immaculate, incredibly well-preserved, mid-late 19th century Ame ri can antique J. Roxbury, MA, blue slip decorated, stamped sidewall typography, 2 quart, handled, salt-glazed putty white and cobalt blue stoneware whiskey jug. Clearly stamped on the top front sidewall of the jug opposite the attached handle, features high case typography that says’J. Cor(ner) Dudely & Adams St(ree)ts. It’s without flea-bites or ceramic material loss along the top rim and along the bottom, wire cut base. There are episodes of where the putty white salt glaze is absent on the facia of the jug but this isn’t a result of wear, as much as it’s the result of being quickly and mass-produced for the growing greater Boston spirits market. This after all, was a ceramic whiskey jug and its function was to hold whiskey and distilled spirits. It would have had a natural cork plug inserted into the top of the jug. The handle is slab constructed and is firmly attached to the body. There’s a small and insignificant fissure at the base of the handle, occurring during the firing of the jug in a kiln. Great stamped typography and original surfaces. Very handsome and very scarce. From a time, long since past, when Roxbury, MA was not a blighted, economically desperate, challenged neighborhood of Boston but was an upscale, choice residential neighborhood, once lined with well kept brick apartments, brownstone town houses and a community within Boston proper, which featured some of Boston’s most notable citizens and some of its wealthiest, made fantastically rich by the industrial revolution in Ame ri can manufacturing. This mid-late 19th century stoneware ceramic whiskey jug produced there, represents what Roxbury, MA once was and that was a vibrant Boston neighborhood, with its share of local industry, manufacturing, stately parks and even statelier, ostentatious Victorian walled mansions.
