This is a 5 gallon glazed crock pot container used for food storage in the 1800s. This crock has some chipping of the glaze on it in spots, as you can see in the pictures. It actually shows the telltale white clay that is completely unique to the Edgefield area. This stuff can’t be faked! There is a “5” incised near one of the handles to easily identify this a a five gallon crock. The term “Edgefield pottery” is used to identify alkaline-glazed stoneware first produced in Edgefield District in the 1810s. Edgefield pottery blends the cultural traditions of England, Europe, Asia, and Africa. For more than 200 years, the Edgefield area of South Carolina has been known for its production of a specific type of pottery called stoneware. Strong and non-porous, stoneware is usually glazed and fired in a kiln at very high temperatures.
