Here’s an 1880s antique White’s Utica Pottery cobalt dog decorated stoneware covered tobacco jar with its original hollow humidor lid and rare original paper label on bottom from a Richmond, Virginia tobacco company… The front of jar has a bold raised relief hunting dog with dark cobalt blue color underglaze… Mottled texture to the surface of gray finish… Cobalt finial on top of original matching lid which is hollow on underside to hold a sponge that would keep the tobacco or cigars stored inside the jar moist… Rare original paper label on bottom of jar reads in part: J. EVERY PERSON IS CAUTIONED, UNDER THE PENALTY OF LAW, NOT TO USE THIS PACKAGE FOR TOBACCO AGAIN…. Heavy stoneware jar is 5″tall (6 3/8″with lid)…. Grey color with cobalt decoration….. Excellent shiny near mint condition with no chips, hairlines or repairs of any kind to jar or original lid. One small rust spot at base on back.
