This is a Rare & Fantastic Estate Fresh old Stoneware Crock from a longtime collector of NY Stoneware. I was just away on a trip back east and found this gem at an old haunt of mine back outside of Syracuse. He bought it from a local estate. This is a super. Scarce early antique primitive salt glazed stoneware ovoid crock made in Utica, New York by Jonathan F. The story of Utica, New York in the earliest days of the 1800’s, begin with the Erie Canal opening in 1825. Before that, the village was a small spot on the map in the beautiful Mohawk Valley of New York State and nothing like what you would find there today. The earliest local stoneware potters were Justin Campbell, Jonathan Brayton, Kellogg & Doolittle and the Fayette Pottery operated by David Roberts and with some late help from Shavalia Fayette, all established, in or around 1825 – 1830’s. All of these early stoneware pottery businesses, amid the volatile economy of Utica at the time, were short lived. Brayton Made Pottery, according to one of the stoneware bibles ” Early Potters and Potteries of New York ” by William Ketchum, from 1830 – 1833, only 2+ short years before partnering with Fayette in 1833. This is a 2 gallon size (maybe a bit larger) ovoid crock with applied lug handles. The crock is 11.75″ tall and approx 10 1/2″ wide at the belly. On the face is this big “Plow” flower as it is often referred to. The work was done by hand and brush and with very dark blue cobalt glaze. The clay is that classic Upstate NY Grey in color and the exterior is salt glazed very shiny. Inside the crock is washed in Albany slip and is slightly stained from use. The lip is flouted and the handles quite pronounced. The potter gave us an incised double line about the shoulder. There is no lid. Above the flower is the makers mark stamp, created using discarded printers type from a local newspaper. The stamp is washed in blue as well and reads. The crock has top edge chipping as described above, that’s it! No other form of damage. The crock is about 190 years old. Great find for any collector or a nice addition to a farmhouse display!
