Antique Stoneware Tall Jar Salt Glazed and Decorated Blue Lettering on Gray A. For your Stoneware or American Pottery Collection-WVJar1. Description: A beautiful nice size wheel thrown stoneware salt glazed antique tall jar. This salt glazed stoneware piece is decorated with blue stenciled lettering over the gray background. The lettering spells A. On the exterior near the middle. The piece has a flat round base with a slightly recessed center and rising straight sides. There is also a raised ledge near the top delineating a short concave neck ending in a formed rim that is 1/2″ tall and 1/2″ wide. The rim also has a lip where a lid would sit to protect the contents of the jar. This jar is missing the lid. The inside of the jar is also glazed with light brown colored background and is glazed. The piece is obviously a handmade wheel thrown piece. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of the description. Date: Uncertain but most likely sometime around 1875. Size: Measures 5″ diameter at the base, 4 1/4″ diameter at the top, and is 7 3/4 high. The piece weighs a bit over three pounds and one ounce. Marks: Marked in stenciled lettering A. Distinguishing Characteristics – Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very well made and very nice typical Americana piece of stoneware. The piece which we believe is about 150 years old has nice color, shape, and is in excellent condition deserves a prominent spot in any stoneware pottery or American pottery collection. Condition: Excellent condition with no cracks, repairs, chips, hairlines, or crazing to the glaze. The only thing we see are a few manufacturing defects to the surface. There appear to be spots where the material popped during firing and left depressions, created crevasses, and roughness on the surface. These are all original to the making, which you can expect in such primitive pieces of pottery from the past. These truly do not affect the looks or the quality of the piece and give the piece great character. Finally, as is the case with all these primitive pottery pieces, the piece has an additional few of the usual defects you would expect such as pops, unglazed areas and uneven spots. A great looking piece in great condition after being around for a long time. Please see photos to appreciate the quality, beauty and condition of this great piece.
