The embossed advertisement is for S. SHEPHARD & SONS LIMITED, WINE & SPIRIT MERCHANTS, ABERDEEN and the large numbers 7757. The jug comes with the original wicker casing and is in perfect condition, no repairs, no chips, no cracks, etc. The jug is about 10.5″ tall and 7″ wide. Needs a little cleaning, rather dusty, came from a recent estate of a couple in their 90’s. I could not find another one of these, not even starting with the initial S. Here is some further info on this jug….. Hello, I use to live and work in Aberdeen, and I also collect Buchan pottery. Buchan (1833 – 1904) established the Buchan pottery on Bridge Street Portobello on December 11th 1867. There was a partnership from 1869 to 1877 with a Mr Murray who was a pottery owner in Glasgow. It appears to have been just a financial partnership. However, pottery was Marked Murray & Buchan for a while. To cut a long story short, the pottery marks varied throughout the years and the Buchan mark on your flagon would appear to be from the 1920’s /1930’s. The pottery continued in Portobello until 1972 when it moved to Crieff, a town in Perthshire, where it lasted until 2000. Regarding S Shepherd & Sons Aberdeen. They were wine and spirit merchants at 52 King Street Aberdeen. Mr Shepherd’s first name was Simpson. They bottled 2 whiskies. Firstly, a 5 year old malt whisky named Greenfield. Secondly, a blended whisky called Fortification which was for the Italian market. Where these whiskies were made is anyone’s guess. There is a website based in the Netherlands called Whiskybase and you will find a photograph of each bottle there. This item is in the category “Antiques\Primitives”.
