Pictured is an early blue & white (off-white) spongeware pitcher offered for sale. The pitcher has a great bulbous, ovoid shape & form, a small pinched spout, & a brown Albany slip glazed interior. There are two thin incised bands around the midsection as well. The sponged decoration has a “mossy” effect, specific to these pitchers which are attributed to having been produced in Navarre, Ohio. The pitcher measures 9″ in height, 5 1/2″ in base diameter, & dates from 1860 – 1885. It’s in excellent condition with no nicks, damage, or repairs whatsoever. Navarre is located in northeastern Ohio in Stark County just southwest of Canton.
