This beautiful one quart redware pitcher was made in Edgerton for The American Museum Collection that featured adaptations from the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The pitcher was hand thrown and hand decorated with the same techniques used by 18th and 19th century Pennsylvania potters. The red clay pitcher is decorated with slip trailed flowers and leaves, including a large tulip, in soft green and yellow. The handle meets the body with a “whale’s tail” and has a squiggle of yellow on it. Around the neck below the pulled spout are three incised lines; the base has a 1/4 inch thick foot rim. The pitcher is finished with a glossy salt glaze inside and out. The dry bottom has two stamped marks: an oval with the letters R. And a rectangle with the initials AN for Rockdale potter Aaron Netsell. In a stroke of good luck, the original six page pamphlet accompanies the pitcher, containing much more information. This pitcher stands 7 3/4 inches tall on a 4 1/4 inch round base and measures 6 inches across at the base of the handle. It weighs 2 pounds 6 ounces and is in excellent condition, with virtually no discernible wear. It’s a handsome, highly collectible piece of American redware.
