Shop Now and Avoid the Crowds! This is a great, probably southern-made storage/canning jar with a one-of-a-kind glaze. The main color is a medium brown that many southern potters call “Tobacco Spit” and that is adorned with a watery green drip on the shoulder and a wide green band on the body in a heavier slip glaze of the same color and that has some heavy drips from it, a few of which reach the base. Below where a string could be tied to hold a cloth over the mouth, there is a raised ridge that has a thin line incised into it. The potter needed a steady hand to incise that thin line in an already thin ridge. I’ve only seen that detail on one other stoneware crock/jar and that one was the same shape as this one but was much smaller (7.5) and the glaze was a plain, dark brown. This piece was made so that it could be used with a cloth tied over the top or wax-sealed for storage or used with a lid, probably wooden, and this great jar could’ve been used for everyday dry storage or as a kitchen-size churn. Due to the style of the crock and the red clay, I’d attribute this great piece to northern Georgia or northeastern Alabama, early-to-mid-1800s. The interior is glazed brown. The jar stands 11 ht. By 8.5 d. Base, and it has a 5 mouth. It weighs 10 lbs. There is light, surface scratching that can be seen in the camera flash, an old chip (1/4) inside the lip, a much smaller chip on top of the rim and a spot near the base that was filled in after firing. The clay is red. The only other stoneware crock of. Any kind that I’ve seen with this unusual glaze treatment is a piece by Clarkson Crolius, New York, ca 1815. That style may have inspired the potter when decorating this unusual crock. It will be carefully packed with bubble wrap and double-boxed to be sure it arrives safely.
