This is a very unique and scarce piece of New York State pottery. These were used in the kitchen for food storage. A wooden lid would be attached and then snapped into place. The body, both interior and exterior has Albany slip glaze. While the top area /rim has a salt glazed finish. Has cobalt stamp reading Geddes, NY Patented April 27 1875. The base and an area of body near base has some hairlines. Does show through in an area. There are small areas of glaze loss to body. Has numerous chips to areas to top, where object is salt glazed.
