MID-LATE 19TH CENTURY AME RI CAN ANTIQUE PRIMITIVE DEEP COBALT BLUE SLIP HAND PAINTED, DECORATED LARGE FE RN FRONT SIDEWAL L MOTIF, PUTTY WH ITE SALT. GLAZED, W HEEL-THROWN STONEWARE. CROCK, wit h WIRE CUT BASE & DEEP. SEPIA BROWN INTERIOR GLAZE. [Sloped neck has repeating incised lines]. Mid-late 19th century Ame ri can antique primitive blue slip decorated stoneware crocks and jugs. 9 14″ Height x 8 12″ Width. Offered for your review and consideration is this very nice and fairly clean small-medium sized, mid-late 19th century Ame ri can antique primitive cobalt blue fern motif, blue slip decorated, putty white, salt glazed stoneware ceramic crock. It features incised neck repeating lines and great early form. The front sidewall of the crock is hand painted and decorated with deep cobalt blue, hand painted large, upright fern motif. The crock wasn’t discovered with a wooden lid, which would have originally acted as a cover. There’s no hairline cracks on its sidewalls and it’s structurally sound. There’s a small chip on the top lid with subsequent ceramic material loss. It’s a fairly minor chip and isn’t accompanied by a hairline crack. The other damage is superficial and occurs on the lower sidewall. The salt glaze has weakened in this area due to previous exposure to moisture and has discolored and flaked off in this finite area. But what’s right about it is far greater than what’s wrong with it. Great deep cobalt blue fern hand painted sidewall decoration. A very handsome mid to late 19th century Ame ri can antique primitive cobalt blue decorated stoneware ceramic crock. Recently found in north-central Massachusetts.
