THE ABBAYE DE LA CELLE IN THE NORTH OF PROVENCE WAS CLOSING FOR RENOVATIONS AND NEEDED TO SELL OBJECTS SHOWN IN THE ABBEY FOR GENERATIONS. DO YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW RARE THIS IS? IT IS A’ONE OF A KIND”SIFFLET’. A SIFFLET WAS A BIRD WHISTLE MADE AS A TOY FOR CHILDREN. MANY SMALL VERSIONS OF USUAL HOUSEHOLD ITEMS WERE MADE FOR CHILDREN TO PLAY WITH IN A MINIATURE SIZE. TRUMPETS, CRUCHES THAT YOU FILLED WITH WATER TO MAKE DIFFERENT BIRD CALLS AND FOR PLAYING AT GAMES. POTERIE POUR LES ENFANTS’ WAS THE NAME GIVEN TO THESE PIECES. I COLLECTED A RATHER LARGE COLLECTION OF THESE PIECES OVER THE YEARS AT SMALL FLEA-MARKETS WHERE I WAS THE ONLY AMERICAN ALTHOUGH THEY DIDN’T KNOW IT! I FOUND SOME OF THE PIECES THAT TODAY, COLLECTORS WOULD LOVE TO FIND AND OWN. IMAGINE MY SURPRISE WHEN I SAW THIS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING MINIATURE SIFFLET WHISTLE…. WHEN YOU PUT IN DIFFERENT AMOUNTS OF WATER, YOU CHANGED THE SOUND. MADE AS THE MOST DETAILED AND BEAUTIFUL CHILD’S POTERIE, EVER! IT HAS THE HOLES WHERE YOU ADDED WATER… AND YOU BLEW INTO THE SIFFLET AND THE END OF THE TAIL. SOMEONE HAD THIS MADE AS THE DETAIL AND JUST’THE WHOLE THING’ IS A LITTLE JEWEL. I CAN’T IMAGINE WHAT SOMEONE WOULD PAY IN PARIS! 4 X 3 IN SIZE. CLEARLY MADE IN THE JASPE OF CLIOUSCLAT FROM THE MID 19TH CENTURY. SOMEONE SHOULD GRAB THIS AND PROUDLY SHOW IT OFF! PRICE WILL NOT BE DROPPED. VERY FEW CONFIT POTS WERE MADE IN THE EXEMPLARY POTERIE CENTER OF’ST JEAN DE FOS’ JUST NORTH OF MONTPELIER. MOSTLY PIECES MADE TO ORDER WERE CREATED BY SOME OF THE TOP ARTISTS OF TERRE VERNISSEE. BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED CARAFES AND PREPARATION BOWLS WERE USUALLY MADE TO BE BOUGHT WITHOUT AN ORDER. THE CONFIT POTS OF ST JEAN ALSO HAD TO BE ORDERED. THEY WERE NOT MADE TO BE USED. THEY WERE MADE IN THE CONFIT FORM, USUALLY BOUGHT BY AGRARIAN SIMPLE FOLK WHO WORKED WITH THE USUAL CONFIT POT AND THUS WANTED ONE OF THESE PRIZED FORMS CREATED BY ST JEAN DE FOS WHERE THE CONFIT POT BECAME A WORK OF ART. I HAD A COLLECTION OF THE THREE. THE LARGEST SIZE WHICH WAS ONLY FROM LUCK AND THE MEDIUM AND SMALL. I HAVE LET THEM GO OVER THE YEARS BUT… I STILL CONSIDER THIS TO BE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FORM OF A POT À CONFIT THAT WAS MADE. THE END OF THE 19TH C SIGNALED THE END OF THE FINE POTERIES AT ST JEAN AND IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO COPY. THE GLAZE COLORS OF ST JEAN CAN BE RECOGNIZED BY EXPERTS AS THEIR SECRET FOR MAKING THESE MAGNIFICENT HUES WERE NEVER LEARNED. WHEN I SAW THIS AT THE ABBAYE, I REALIZED THAT ONLY A FEW OF US KNEW OF THIS RARE, RARE PIECE. TWO BEAUTIFUL CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CONFIT POT WERE THE BEAUTIFULLY SHAPED HANDLES WHICH TOOK MUCH TIME TO MAKE PERFECTLY AND THE FACT THAT UNLIKE OTHER CONFIT POTS, THE GLAZE WENT DOWN TO ABOUT A FEW INCHES FROM THE BOTTOM. I DOUBT ANOTHER EVER FOUND ITS WAY OVER TO THE U. 8.5 INCHES IN HT. We always offers the same quality of excellence that make us the premier experts of’Terres Vernissees’ in the US.
