Antique Salt Glazed Stoneware 1-Gallon Jug/Crock Made by the Brothers Ottman, Gilbert and William, in the years 1872 to 1892. The Ottman Brothers formed one of three huge stoneware companies in Ft. Edward after the Civil War. They produced beautiful stoneware for the home. The growing economy due to western expansion fed one of the greatest business competitions of the 19th century in New York State. This crock measures 12″ high and 7 1/2″ wide at the slightly wider base. On the front is a cool cobalt blue decoration affectionately called “The Tornado” by some and “The Beehive” by others. Using a slip cup trailing deep blue cobalt glaze the artist created this unusual design. The crock also features a maker’s stamp above the design which reads: OTTMAN BRO’S & CO, FORT EDWARD N. There are chips around the lip from use and a tight crack that runs along the bottom, but barely noticeable. Also some speckled glaze loss on the body. Please see all pictures provided as they are the true descriptor and you can make your own judgements. All in all a very nice and hard to find Ottman Brothers example and a great stoneware crock for your home. The item “ANTIQUE OTTMAN BROS. FT.
