Norton, Bennington, Vermont, mid-late 19th century Ame ri can antique two-gallon, salt glazed stoneware ceramic jug, with attached handle. It has exuberant cobalt blue slip glaze front sidewall decoration. The hand decorated, gestural floral motif is quite large, clear and delicately drawn. The jug has some minor to moderate body discoloration to the entirety of its lower sidewalls but more importantly, it doesn’t suffer from any hairline cracks, noticeable flea-bites or sidewall bruises, resulting in concussion cracks or spiderwebs on its sidewalls. Only the top pouring spout has a few tiny and very minor flea-bites to its front edge. This jug may have been discolored from the dried molasses that was found inside it and which was carefully removed after several rinses. This is evidence of one of the many diverse uses of antique stoneware jugs by 19th century Ame ric ans. Structurally sound but with residual staining from the molasses it once held inside.
