For sale is this recently found mid-19th century Ame ri can antique bumble bee sting blue slip decorated salt glazed stoneware large #3 handled crock in very well-preserved antique condition. The large, heavy, early stoneware crock was found in southeastern Massachusetts, nearer to Providence, RI than to Boston, MA and is a fairly early one, pre-dating the US Civil War by several years. It’s a honey mustard color rather than the usual, more common putty white salt glaze base color, often seen in 19th century antique ceramic stoneware jugs and early crocks. The glaze has episodes of burnt umber and burnt sienna. The bottom base plate isn’t glazed and has a cut surface, when the crock was cut away from the potter’s wheel. The slab constructed sidewall handles were attached to the crock’s body after it was thrown on the wheel but before it was fired in the kiln. The blue slip front sidewall hand painted decoration is called bumble bee sting and is large, gestural and exuberant. It’s a great early to mid 19th century Ame ri can antique crock. There are no hairline cracks or significant ceramic loss occurring anywhere on it. There’s just a few minor, slight’stings’ on the side handles and a slightly larger’flea bite’ or small ceramic chip on the bottom edge. It’s now between 160 to 180 years old. Great warm, earthy honey mustard salt glaze and terrific blue slip hand decorated bumble bee sting front sidewall gestural painted design. Good to Very Good overall antique condition.
