Large Antique Soup Tureen Pottery Blue White Wild Rose Nuneham Courtenay c 1830

A very collectable and attractive large antique blue and white transfer ware soup tureen and cover dating from around 1830. Both the tureen and cover feature the Nuneham Courtenay pattern with a Wild Rose border. This is referenced in the printed mark on the back, which does not give the maker’s details. We think however, that it may possibly by John Ridgway who used a very similar mark to this, being a crowned oval garter mark with the words “Stone Ware” in the middle of the oval and the name “Wild Rose” in a ribbon below. The idyllic scene shows the house and parkland of Nuneham Courtenay, owned by the Earl of Harcourt and sited near Oxford. The grounds were landscaped by Capability Brown and this scene shows his riverside walk with the lock keeper’s cottage in the foreground. The tureen measure 15 inches long, 8.5 inches wide and 8 inches high and together weigh 2.55Kg The tureen is in good antique condition with a crack to the lid and the base, there is a small glaze chip on the inside on the base and some fritting to the glaze some crazing and discolouration commensurate with age and use.
