14thC NORTHERN THAILAND SUKHOTHAI KHMER INCISED STONEWARE POTTERY STORAGE VASE. An unglazed classical form baluster shaped stoneware pottery vase/Amphora, originating from Northern Central Thailand and linked to the rise of the Thai Sukhothai Kingdom. The vase bears Khmer features in terms of the shape and impressed motifs and is likely produced in the 14th Century in the kilns of Suphanburi and Si Satchanalai (Ban Bang Pun ware). An elegant form with incised rings and four appliqué adornments, the jar stands on a flat disc shaped foot, leading up to broadly shouldered body with incised bands, impressed decoration around the widest point, jabbed marks on upper shoulder, the broad neck with incised upward pointing darts leading to a slightly flared rim. The unglazed grey/blue stoneware has an attractive blackened patina created during reduction firing, the surface shows clear signs of burial. A similar example has been exhibited at The Sakai City Museum. Height: 23.7 cm or 9 3/8 inches. Width: 16.5 cm or 6 3/4 inches. In good condition, without restoration. The piece is intact and feels robust, delivering an excellent example of this type of antiquity. There are some minor losses to the upper and lower rims, and a small. Crack to the flared rim. Much of its original brown glaze has been lost, however the piece exhibits an attractive aged patina. Calcified surface visible throughout, as expected.
