I’ve done my research and he is of Tonala, Mexico origin. This is an exceptionally large Tonala figure of a cat measuring 23 long. The cat is beautifully molded and paint decorated by hand in the traditional Tonala, Mexico style. And might I add, the artistic detail is extraordinary – please be sure to look at the detail in each included photo. But, I hasten to add, these photos do this piece no justice. He looks so much more appealing in person. I love the look on the cat’s face – aloof attitude with a human like mouth and impressionistic eyes. Very good overall condition; minor fading to some painted areas which is normal for such a piece because it was not fired after paint decoration. There is an age related crack along the bottom that DOES NOT run up the side and does not affect its aesthetic appearance. Take a close look at the bottom of photo #7 and you will see a small red arrow. That arrow points out the end of the crack at the bottom edge so you can see it does not extend up the side. Also, take a close look at photos 11 and 12 – you will see what appears to be a patch. This “patch” was a part of the hand pressed pottery making process used by the artist. You will also see that the hand painted decoration goes seamlessly right across the edges of this patch. I have a close up photo of the inside of the piece of this exact spot where you can see, on the inside, this spot is perfectly smooth to show it is not damage repair. Also worth noting – it appears on the back side of the cat. An artist would locate this feature on the back purposefully so it would not show when the cat is displayed. I have many additional photos I’d be happy to share with you – just let me know. It has no damage of any kind – as mentioned just some minor paint ware in some spots which is patina on a piece like this. I will use an expedited service. Please ask any and all questions up front. Because of the age and fragility of this piece this sale MUST be made final.
