Antique S. L. Pewtress New Haven CT Salt Glazed Stoneware Crock withCobalt Bird
Up for sale is this wonderful antique S. Pewtress New Haven, Connecticut (CT) three gallon salt glazed stoneware crock with lug handles/ears. There is a large right-facing cobalt blue bird on the front. Its fuzzy but still beautiful. Its in as is, as found, as photographed, what you see is what you get condition. There are fabulous diagonal ripples in the glaze. This crock is not perfect. There is a large vertical hairline crack that goes from almost three-fourths of the way down inside the crock; it travels up and over the top lip and travels down the front to where the bottom and side meet. There is a large, smooth old chip beside the crack. There is an almost imperceptible horizontal hairlineprobably 5 or soit ends on the side and on the other, goes down vertically and across the bottom, but ends before going up the side. There is a small chip on the left earoutside near the bottomnothing terrible. The right ear is good. The interior is a caramel color with minor stains and wear from use. There is a chunk-chip missing from the hairline inside the crock. The crock has slightly sloped sides. Despite the damage, it displays beautifully. It needs to be glued. It would be a worthy candidate for professional restoration. It measures approximately 10 3/8 high, is 10 3/4-11 across the top, 10 5/8 across the bottom and weighs a whopping 13 lbs. If youre a beginner in the world of antique stoneware or just love the farmhouse look, it would be a nice piece to own. Usually bird crocks are ridiculously expensive. This one is wounded but affordable. This crock will be packaged with extreme care and caution. It will be double boxed to ensure the new owner receives it intact.
