Hull Pottery ANTIQUE STONEWARE PITCHER Scarce Eagle Motif
This handsome blue and white stoneware pitcher was made by the A. Hull Pottery Company of Crooksville, Ohio, in the early 1900’s. The company started in 1905 making useful household pottery and became known for their excellent quality. This pitcher is salt glazed, which produces a sealed, slightly pitted surface that prevents liquids from penetrating the stoneware clay. Hull’s tankard pitchers like this one were all similar in body shape, with pulled spouts, arched handles and raised decorative bands at top and bottom. The difference was in the designs in relief in the center medallion on each side such as cows, clusters of grapes or apricots and pairs of birds. The eagle with raised wings on this pitcher is a fairly scarce design. The bird is clutching a variation of the shield on the Great Seal of the United States, with stripes, stars and four arrows. The piece measures 8 inches tall and 8 inches across the top from spout to handle. It weighs 3 pounds, 9 ounces and is in very good condition. There are a few glaze pops and a small nick which can be seen at the lower right of the center medallion when the handle is turned to the right. The piece is covered with an extremely fine network of crazing inside and out and, with the exception of a small chip on the edge of the dry foot rim, there are no other chips, cracks or loss of color. It’s a great pitcher to display as is or use with flowers–imagine it filled with daisies!
