This is what’estate fresh’ should really mean, antiques that have been curated, vetted, well-taken care of by generations of responsible custodial handlers and in this kind of nearly unblemished, untouched, near original condition. Perfect’ is almost impossible for any antique object that’s now 150 to 170 years old, let alone an antique ceramic object, initially designed not only to be some kind of isolated decorative accessory but a beautifully decorated utilitarian one, meant to hold many household items and foodstuffs, in this case from honey, to vinegar, to cider apples in brine, to pickled cucumbers and pickled vegetables. Think about the myriad of things that could’ve happened to this Haxstun, Ottman and Co. Edward, NY antique 4-gallon stoneware crock in the 150 to 170 years since its initial realization and you’ll agree that a few tiny, barely noticeable nicks on the sides of its upper, round rim and a small glaze flake on its vertical sidewall, don’t mar or depreciate it much. It has great, hand decorated cobalt blue slip glaze decoration, very aggressively realized and covering almost the entirety of the large crock’s sidewall. Pictured are a meandering, fluttering butterfly and a large, blooming flower, running diagonally across its surface, all hand painted with cobalt blue slip glaze, all done with most likely a single index finger dipped in blue slip. There’s also the faintest, quite small’bruise’ and associated glaze nick found on the crock’s sidewall in the center of the back of the crock. So, no it’s perhaps not’mint’ but it’s close to being unblemished, considering its. And its different component parts and elements. Just an outstanding, superlative. And an excellent example of.
