RARE HELLER (AME RI CAN, 20TH C) DATED 1974 SIGNED MODERNIST VINTAGE MONUMENTAL BAS-RELIEF FIGURATIVE DECORATED STONEWARE CERAMIC FACE BOWL, W/METALLIC GLAZE & RING OF INFANT’S HEADS ON BOWL’S SIDEWALLS. Mid-20th c American vintage hand decorated Modernist art pottery. 13″ in Diameter x 6 ¼” Height. In absolutely 100% untouched and undisturbed condition. Incredibly well-preserved and in nearly originally constituted shape. It was only very carefully washed with very mild soap, rinsed with tepid water and then allowed to air dry. It doesn’t suffer from hairline cracks, flea-bites, abrasions, scuffs or any depreciating, debilitating, noticeable stains. Glorious, enigmatic and entirely mysterious. What are you serving punch in this holiday season for your family, friend’s and guests? I bet they will never forget this monumental ceramic bowl on the sideboard, table or bar in your home. After all, why have a New Year’s celebration party without making it an absolutely drop-dead, knock-out, truly sensational one? The vessel is not just large, it’s monumental. Huge may be the most appropriate modifier for its enormous size. It’s wheel thrown and then hand decorated with bas-relief child’s heads, eight of them in all, affixed to the bowl’s wheel-thrown sidewalls and then framed with slab shards of clay all along the exterior. The glaze fluctuates between sepia and sienna brown to speckled white sandstone putty glaze, to indigo blue impregnated metallic copper and gold glaze. The ceramic bowl is clearly signed in cursive script’Heller, 1974′ on the unglazed, recessed stoneware clay base plate. The glaze is a satin to glossy, semi-reflective glaze, used during the late Modernist period of American ceramic arts and the production of art pottery. You won’t find a more compelling, engaging and absolutely beautiful Modernist expression of ceramic art. It deserves to be seen by many. More beautiful than beautiful. Fresh to the marketplace and recently picked from a very well-appointed South Shore, Massachusetts fine estate. Very Good to Excellent overall vintage condition. There’s a few extemporaneous clay spots on the vessel’s exterior surfaces (not repairs) toward the outside of the bowl’s rim. It remains as the artist originally intended and crafted.
