Fine Antiques & Collectibles. A rare 19th century Minton travelling font. It is made from stoneware and has a white glaze. The style is very much in the gothic taste and it dates to 1877 (there is a Minton date code impressed into the base). Along with the factory mark it is also impressed ST. MARY, the design was based on the 15th century gothic font in St Marys church in Nottingham. The decoration is of blind lancet windows above a pedestal, other designs were also made. These miniature fonts, sometimes called pocket fonts, were used extensively by the church during the 19th century, and they sometimes came in their own travelling case. Very few come up for sale these days, but there must still be a good number tucked away in churches around the country. A great and rare find. Some period wear with scuffs in places. Some light discolouring along edges where the glaze is thin and the substrate is showing through a little. Slight production flaws as expected. No significant faults as can be seen in the images. Height: 19.7 cm (7 3/4 inch). Width: 13.5 cm (5 3/8 inch). Weight: 1540 grams (before packing). Stock Code: 0813 OC17-1.
