Antique 16 German Stoneware WESTERWALD Pottery Pitcher Jug Ewer Martin Luther
A late 19th-century German stoneware pitcher with a heavily embossed & detailed design of foliage, anthemions, scrolls & quatrefoils with blue, brown, and dark green glazes over the gray stoneware. The spout is the head of Bacchus, God of Wine. The pitcher commemorates the 15th-century Monk Martin Luther with two panels and I believe it’s also his head on the handle. One panel quotes Luther. Wer nicht liebt Wein, Weib, und Gesang. Der bleibt ein Narr sein Lebenlang. (He who loves not wine, women and song, remains a fool his whole life long). The other panel I can’t quite make out but mentions Schou Dr. Likely a Grand Tour souvenir. It measures 16″ high by 7 1/2″ across the widest part of the body. In very good antique condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs–there may be a fleabite nick here and there to the highpoints of the relief. Note one, as-made, half-moon firing separation inside the spout opening. The jug is unmarked except for an impressed “64”. A former owner’s paper label remains attached.
