MID-LATE 19TH CENTURY FRANK B. NORTON WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS COBALT BLUE. SLIP FLORAL DECORATED 2 GALLON, SALT. GLAZED STONEWARE WHISKEY JUG, with STAMPED SIDEWALL TYPOGRAPHY. Mid-late 19th century Ame ri can antique decorated stoneware jugs & crocks. 14 12″ Height x 8 12″ Diameter/Width. There’s some slight loss and minor chips to the top surface of the pouring spout of the jug. There’s also a very small fissure associated with one of these chips but it doesn’t travel past the top of the spout. The jug remains structurally sound and intact without any further condition issues. This mid to late 19th century Ame ri can c obalt blue slip decorated 2-gallon stoneware ceramic whiskey handled jug, features exuberant and slippery floral hand painted motif, which nearly covers the entire girth of the front of the jug below the stamped typography. The sidewalls are decorated with putty white and cobalt blue salt glaze, with episodes of burnt sienna. The pouring spout is naturally inflected with a semi-transparent burnt sienna wash, which interacts with the predominately putty white salt glaze of the body. The cobalt blue slip hand painted floral motif, is highlighted by its semi-transparent quality, making it very painterly and kinetic, as if it’s kinetic and still moving. A wonderful antique Ame ri can piece of decorated stoneware in still quite well preserved overall condition. It may not be absolutely perfect but as far as condition is concerned, it’s by and large, still in good shape and its wear and evidence of prior use, are both entirely commensurate with its age and antique pedigree. Just a beautiful mid to late 19th century Ame ri can antique object. Scarce and harder and harder to find. Good to Very Good overall antique condition.
