I have here a 100% authentic 1860s New York Stoneware churn. It is stamped with “NEW YORK STONEWARE CO” at the top inside of a rectangle with the number “4” stamped above that. This churn is in excellent shape for its age. The churn shows surface spider cracks only, they DO NOT go all the way through to the inside. IOW, you can look at the inside of the piece and will not see the cracks. This is very typical of 150 year old stoneware. There is a somewhat larger sized chip from the mouth of the jug but it almost looks like it might be what’s considered a “factory flaw”. Factory flaws add a great deal of character to a piece like this. The process and time it took to make these churns were far greater than not putting a piece into the marketplace because of a factory flaw. The front has a floral pattern. The piece overall has alot of patina – it looks as though it had never been cleaned. You couldn’t reproduce this type of patina – only time can do it. This piece came from the estate of an elderly gentleman who died at the age of 93 – he left behind a slew of incredible antiques; this is one of them. He used it as his cane holder – see the last pic, canes ARE NOT included in this sale. However, if you also collect antique canes let me know – they are for sale too. Due to the age and fragility of this piece this sale has got to be made final so please any and all questions up front.
