SCULPTURE NATIVE THAI CULTURE POTTERY GARUDA FIGURE SAWANKHALOK STONEWARE RELIC. A magnificent precedent of a’Sawankhalok’ pottery 18/19 from the historical pottery village of Sawankhalok in northern Thailand. The Garuda is beautifully decorated in a rich brown glaze, draped down the bulbous body, glazed clay sculpture. The finely fractured “crackled” surface of the glaze is lightly speckled from ash residue deposits penetrating the thickly glazed surface, when fired in a low temperature kiln. This style of folk pottery made its first appearance during the late Sukhothai period of the fourteenth century, and was prominent in the ceramic trade until the sixteenth century. Influenced by Chinese potters, Thai villagers created not only items of pottery, but also architectural clay elements, and figurines of various types.
